A really great middle ground for the Jazz Bass is to get a traditional passive Fender and a Sadowsky Outboard Preamp. The passive instruments just have an open tonal quality that is tough to improve on. The Alembic Series Preamp is the only active onboard circuit I am aware of that manages to retain the uncompressed quality of the passive pickups. Aug 26, 2009. New Zealand. Amps have active inputs in case you have a seriously hot signal to go into it. In my experience only my RBI would have required the active, all my active basses go fine into passive input with the input gain down a bit. Generallly, anything in the way of foot pedal processors will probably be the same for you, but if Active basses are good for long cable runs. You don't lose signal or high end through a 30ft cable with the preamp acting as a buffer. With passive anything over 15 or so starts to have an audible effect with no buffer. Some active basses have a bit of inherent compression due to having less headroom in the circuit. Get both. Jazz is a much tighter neck at the nut from your P, and the Stingray is a physically smaller instrument. Both will punch, growl and snarl in their own wonderful ways. Add them to your P, and with the full set you can move on to the later stages of Leo's career and start working on your G&L collection. A bass radiator subwoofer appears more similar to a sealed version in that it is fully enclosed. As with the sealed subwoofer, this helps protect it from external elements, like humidity. However, the passive amplifiers make it sound more like the ported subwoofer. Additionally, bass radiator subwoofers are more compact, like the sealed models. In passive, you only control three knobs like a jazz. Volume/tone and blend, in active, you add the control of the other knobs, bass, treble, mid, mid-sweep. I owned a Sire V3 and a couple of MIM Jazz basses - my Sire had more to offer and I sold my MIM Fender basses before I sold my Sire. no there is not a significant dif. however there often is a difference in the quality of the electronics and flexability. imo and for me, i get a better bass sound/tone with passive/simple electronics on the bass and a high quality preamp. most of the time, i find active electronics on the bass plus eq on the amp/preamp to be too much overlap. this is where the dif in sound comes in to play Active preamps are all over the place in terms of how they function. My main J type has an Audere, which, when set flat, basically sounds like a passive bass. But others have more of a baked in sound, even when set flat. It may also be the style of pickups.
